Hello and welcome to the second installment of my trip to the lovely eastern part of Europe. This section is about the time we spent in Bratislava, Slovakia. The picture above was the view from my hotel room. Bratislava is a small(er) city, but it had its own beauty and charm. The main part of the city is a little boring, uninteresting, and extremely commie seeing as it was controlled by the Russians for a number of years in the post WWII era. But Bratislava also has an "Old Town" section that was super cool. This area is only accessible by foot and the roads were completely made of cobblestone. We arrived in Bratislava sometime around midmorning to early afternoon on Sept. 30th. After check in at the hotel, we went on a 3 hour city tour. Here are some pictures from aforementioned tour:
This would be Rolf, the guy in charge, pretending to load and fire this cannon in Old Town.
Andy Warhol stole my cake and coffee...
Later that night, we went to a Bratislavan restaurant where we were served a big meal. There was live music at this restaurant too, which was fun. Afterwards we all went back and some of us went into Old Town for a drink or two. I went with a group of people to an Irish pub called "Dubliners" where we smoked cigars (I showed the ladies how to cut and properly light their cigars). I drank a Guinness and yes, it actually does taste better over here in Europe! I wish I could try it straight from the source...some day I will. Anyway, it was a fun night.
The next day, we went slightly outside of Bratislava to a castle owned by some prince in the 1800's. It was a nice place, especially because it was on the border of Slovakia and Austria. Though I have never been to Austria, I can now say I've looked at mountains that are technically part of Austria. After a brief tour (unfortunately no pictures were allowed inside the castle) we took some neat pictures from outside, near one of the towers.
My dog is dead...(I saw some friends failing to make a believable sad face, so I told them to think 'my dog is dead'. Just look at the results!).
After touring the castle, some of us went for a walk through a park in Bratislava. My favorite pictures from this city are these pictures of my friend Sarah and I waltzing over the Danube River. As I had mentioned before, the Danube cuts through Budapest, Bratislava, and I think even Prague, or at least part of the Czech Republic- we saw it a lot! Plus everyone knows the waltz "Blue Danube" by Strauss. If you don't recognize the name, youtube it. You'll know it right away.
Thanks for tuning in again! Be sure to check back next week for the third and final chapter of this epic series.
And here's a couple videos for your enjoyment.
